Home Furniture Safety Tips to Help Protect Your Family From Accidents and Injury
Thousands of People are treated annually for injuries associated with furniture. The majority of these injuries and deaths are to children. Here are tips you may use to make your household environment safer for yourself and your family.
1. Falls are a leading cause of injuries and deaths in the home. To lessen the likelihood of falls, eliminate clutter, be sure rugs have slip-resistant pads, keep electrical cords out of walkways and clean up spills immediately.
2. Position or Place furniture in low-traffic areas such as corners and sections of the room, out of the range of mobility so that people do not accidentally run into furniture.
3. Shelves should be strategically placed in bedroom and living room areas to limit reaching. They should be low enough to avoid using a step stool but all items should be at eye level in order to find them easily.
4. Make sure furniture is stable and without sharp corners, if possible. This will minimize the chances of injury.
5. Make sure that furniture surfaces are smooth and free of splinters or rough edges. Nails, screws and other joiners should be tight and unexposed.
6. Be careful not to overload the shelves on bookcases. In some cases, it may be a good idea to secure the top portion of the unit to the wall to prevent it from tipping over, especially if children are present in the home.
7. Use the correct size furniture to house your television. Because of their weight, especially the popular larger models, TVs can fall forward if they are not properly supported.
8. Place TVs on lower furniture, as far back as possible. Use angle-braces or anchors to secure furniture to the wall.
9. Make sure that lids have safety latches that prevent the top from falling freely or slamming shut on fingers or a child’s head. Lids also should not lock automatically. If you have an older chest without safety latches, it is recommended that you contact the manufacturer for a replacement latch or remove the lid.
10. Arrange furniture so that outlets are available for lamps and appliances without the use of extension cords. If you must use an extension cord, place it on the floor against a wall where people cannot trip over it. Remove cords from under furniture or carpeting and replace damaged or frayed cords immediately.
11. Remove rugs and runners that tend to slide. Apply double-faced adhesive carpet tape or rubber matting to the backs of rugs and runners. Purchase rugs with slip-resistant backing.
12. Lamps or switches located close to each bed will enable you to get up at night and see where you’re going. Rearrange furniture closer to switches or move lamps closer to beds. Install night lights where possible.
13. Never allow children under 6 years-old on the upper bunk of a Bunk bed. Bunk beds should have guardrails on each side of the top bunk, with the side against the wall or opposite the ladder running the full length of the bed.
14. It’s a good idea to check periodically to make sure all screws, bolts, brackets and other joiners on your furniture are tight and secure.
15. To prevent tempting your children to climb on furniture, do not place enticing objects on tops of tables, dressers or bookcases.
16. You should not place furniture near windows where children can climb or fall out.
When shopping for home furniture, choose quality furniture that is not only comfortable and beautiful, but safe as well.

Furniture Pieces Make Perfect Hiding Places
Did you ever notice that as a child one of the best hiding places in your home was always the closet? And if you were lucky enough to have access to an armoire or wardrobe, the possibility of not being found during the game were even higher. Still a favorite game among parents and children alike, hide and seek wouldn’t be any fun if it weren’t for the hiding places that your home and furniture offered.
Growing up I remember that my aunt had a large, caramel colored, wooden armoire out in the living room – a perfect hiding haven from my cousins who always tried to “seek” me. Even though she kept her television, VCR and CD player on the middle and top shelves, along with her CDs and video tapes in the drawers above and below them, I always managed to find room to squeeze myself in – right between the record player and vinyl LPs. Of course, I was a really small child and could easily fit into this tight nook. No one ever thought to come and find me in the armoire probably because it was usually locked until I came along.
Like any normal child, I learned to rely on my inquisitive nature (though some would say nosy) and searched for different spots to hide in. Sure enough, my aunt’s home provided another hiding nook that my older cousins wouldn’t be able to fit into – a storage bench. Located upstairs against the wall of the hallway, my aunt would store towels and other linens in the bench. Lucky for me, my cousins and I were playing Round Two of hide and seek on laundry day and I got to use the bench as the key to my winning the game. After awhile my aunt was about to put away some linens and towels when she found me during the game; let’s just say that she wasn’t too happy to find her niece in her storage bench.
Now that I’m a bit older, the one piece of furniture I wish I had access to then was a wardrobe. After reading the Chronicles of Narnia: the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, I thought to myself how fun it would’ve been if I could step foot into a magical wardrobe, walk past the coats and into another realm. Without a doubt, that would’ve been the perfect hiding spot! So consider this readers and parents alike, when looking at furniture for your home, do think about how it will benefit each member of your family. Consider the amount of storage space it offers, how much space it will take up in your home, the longevity of the piece, and the likelihood of your child being found if he or she were to decide to play a classic game of hide and seek with you!
Nursing Home Design
Nursing homes are designed to serve patients who require preventive, therapeutic, and rehabilitative nursing care services for non-acute, long-term conditions. Usually residents are elderly and frail, but not bedridden, although many will require canes, walkers, or wheelchairs to help them get around.
Patient stays are on the whole relatively long, with the majority of residents staying for the remaining months or years of their life. Most UK Nursing homes will also care for a number of convalescent patients who are in recovery from acute illnesses, but no longer require hospitalisation.
Nursing homes present special design challenges in that for most residents the nursing home is not just a facility, but indeed their home. The reality is that in most cases the residents will live there for the rest of their lives and, moreover, rarely leave the premises at all. The nursing home therefore becomes their entire world. The challenge is to design an environment that is sensitive and responsive to long-term human needs and well-being, both physical and emotional. Thankfully there are a growing number of companies who specialize in the manufacture and supply of stylish yet practical Nursing Home furniture, which means designers are no longer limited in terms of interior décor.
Building Attributes
Nursing homes are primarily patient care focused rather than medically focused, and consequently its more important attributes are those focusing on the general happiness of its residents rather than high-tech considerations. Features of a well designed nursing home are as follows:
Homely environment
The impact of surroundings and environment on the recovery of Nursing Home patients cannot be underestimated. Both the building’s architect and interior designer needs to gain a thorough understanding of the function of the venue and the profile of its patients. Attention must be paid to ensuring that the exterior and interior design cater for physical and mental disabilities along with loss of sight. This should all be packaged in such as way as to suggest a home away from home as opposed to a medical institute.
Efficiency
In order to create the most efficient space possible for both staff and patients, the nursing home’s design should promote efficiency by minimizing the distance it is necessary to travel between spaces that are most frequently used such as recreational rooms, dining areas and toilets.
Ease of supervision is another essential feature, as allowing supervision of patients by minimal members of staff can reduce the total number of employees required by the nursing home, and can free up nursing staff to perform other tasks at any one time.
Cleanliness and Sanitation
Odour control is a priority for all nursing homes, since many patients are likely to experience occasional incontinence. The resulting odour can give the impression of poor hyginene and uncleanliness to family and other visitors. In addition to operational practices and careful choice of nursing home furniture, the following design features can also help:
Highly visible toilet rooms in key locations near spaces where residents congregate
The use of appropriate, durable finishes for each space used by residents
Proper detailing of such features as doorframes, casework, and finish transitions to avoid dirt-catching and hard-to-clean crevices and joints
Adequate and appropriately located housekeeping spaces
Effective ventilation, which may need to exceed nominal design levels.
Log Furniture
Log furniture certainly has its own place when it comes to decorating. You don’t have to look at it too closely to see what I mean. It is thick, rustic, rough looking wood that makes no attempt at being sleek and graceful like some of it’s more traditional looking furniture counterparts. It is like comparing a 4-Wheel drive pick-up truck to a sleek sports sedan! But one thing about it is that it makes you feel right at home when you are furnishing your place in a rustic decor.
Log furniture is actually a very popular item. All of those not so perfect curves and finishes evokes a certain charm and down-home feeling that many people desire. A lot of people who are interested in a western decor theme pick log-built furniture as their choice to compliment their rustic cabin.
You may wonder why this furniture can be so popular given all of the imperfections that these rustic pieces bear. The explanation may be in the simplicity and raw, natural looks that they retain. Log furniture is also a part of our history as early pioneers headed west and carved their rustic furniture out of the land they were trying to tame. The idea of these bold people making do with what the land gave them gives log furniture a romantic charm that is easy to embrace when you surround yourself with these rustic pieces.
One aspect about log furniture that also has a winning appeal is its longevity and it’s ability to take a beating while still retaining it’s natural charm. It works perfectly for lodge furniture, not only as an obvious fit with a rustic decor, but also because of it’s ability to withstand the day in and day out routine of visitors enjoying their stay.
Whether you love it or hate it, one must admit that log furniture evokes a rustic charm that is unmatched by it’s rivals. What it may lack in style, it certainly makes up for in character.

You should be able to get the right furniture and arrange correctly in your living room. The right living room furniture can create a lasting impression on your guests. Make sure to choose the right color combination in all the rooms, particularly the living room. Consider a huge sofa with a pretty sideboard. Refrain from putting a large furniture piece in front of the door since this does not create a welcoming look.
Make sure to arrange the furniture after you take something as the focal point in a room. This point could be a television set or a fireplace. Refrain from placing too many furniture in your living room since this could hinder the movement of people across it.
In your dining room, the most important part is the dining table. You can choose different shapes, sizes and colors for your dining room table. It is of vital importance to get the right size stuff for your dining room since anything big could cause a problem in the movement across the room. In the same way, a very small dining table can cause a shortfall in the number of seats if you invite guests into your home. Keep in mind that the size of your dining table should allow easy conversation over it.
Refrain from using plain wood for your dining room furniture. Consider using furniture with exotic carvings on it for a better impression and would make your dining room more interesting and attractive. You could also place some other wooden furniture pieces to complete the look of your dining room.
When it comes to the bedroom, your main consideration in deciding how much amount you need is the size. Try to consider a small sofa near the window in a large room. This is a wonderful idea to be able to relax on the sofa after you get back from work. The most important thing needed in your bedroom is a mirror, which comes with a dressing table, side table, bed, a lamp and of course a closet.
Choose the right furniture now and make your home more beautiful!
The History of Patio Furniture
The style of the average home has changed over the years. Large old farmhouses had huge front porches, which were an extension of the family living room. The porches were extremely large. Therefore, a lot of outdoor furniture was required. However, most of the furniture used was merely brought from inside. One piece of furniture was a fixture of most families outdoor furniture, that piece of furniture was a rocking chair. In the 18th century, the rocking chair was known as the American chair. The wooden rocker was also a lot more comfortable than the wrought iron furniture of the day.
You do not see nearly as many rocking chairs now as you did back then.
Another very popular piece of outdoor furniture was the porch swing. The porch swing was a relaxing piece of outdoor furniture on a hot summer evening. Remember, there were no air conditioners back in the 1800′s.
Wicker outdoor furniture was the next style of furniture that became popular in Victorian times. It was popular because it was fancier than the existing outdoor furniture. Plant stands and many different types of tables were added to the porches of American families. The Victorian style was the more the better. Many families had porches full of outdoor furniture.
In the South, many large homes had Verandas. The porch was larger to support the Veranda. These porches had a lot of large over sized furniture such as wicker or cotton upholstered outdoor furniture. Unfortunately, the weather in the South was not indicative to keeping cotton, upholstered furniture outside. Wrought iron furniture was a popular choice in this era as well. To alleviate the uncomfortable iron, cushions were used on chairs.
In the 1930′s, casual outdoor furniture began to appear. Handcrafted wrought iron, cast and tubular aluminum became popular years later. However, comfortable outdoor furniture was desirable to consumers. Lawn chairs became the rage along with straight back chairs as the urban centers became more populated and places to sit outdoors were much smaller in the city.
As the suburbs became a popular place for families, more outdoor furniture was required. This was where the real need for outdoor patio furniture began. People wanted to extend their entertaining outdoors and the need for outdoor furniture grew tremendously. This trend continues to grow today.
More high-tech materials are developed for the construction of outdoor patio furniture, as people want durability, ease of care and strength from their patio furniture. People are spending more and more time outdoors and extending their homes through the concept of outdoor kitchens and rooms. Entertaining at home has made it necessary to have a variety of types of outdoor furniture available. People own hot tubs, swimming pools and many more outdoor toys, which require specific outdoor furniture. As the people demand it, outdoor patio furniture will continue to evolve into stylish pieces they can use everyday.
